About elder abuse advocacy
Preventing and responding to the abuse and mistreatment of older people is everyone’s responsibility. It can be a difficult situation to navigate. It can be unclear and most often involves people the older person is close to.
ADA Law provides information, individual advocacy and legal support for older people living in residential care who are experiencing or at risk of abuse and mistreatment, and seniors living in outback Queensland through our SLASSS service.
Abuse may be:
- Physical: e.g., pinching, squeezing, slapping, pushing or using restraints
- Psychological/emotional: e.g., threats, humiliation, harassment, verbal abuse
- Financial: e.g., forced changes to a will, transferring money or property, withholding funds, neglecting to pay bills
- Social: e.g., restricting access to family, friends, activities or services
- Sexual: e.g., any sexual activity to which the person has not consented
- Neglect: e.g., abandonment, failing to provide the basic necessities of life and care
- Chemical: e.g., over or under medicating
